The Michigan Garden Clubs is a wonderful organization and resource for all garden clubs and individuals in Michigan. Select this link for their website & newsletter:  www.migardenclubs.org   The Cadillac Garden Club is a member organization of MGC.
April is Native Plant Month in 44 states including Michigan! As you start planning your summer garden, think natives. MSU Extension recommends that at least 70% of plants in your garden be native, but every little bit helps. Using them means minimal maintenance, watering and fertilizing because they are so suited to our climate. Classic natives are black-eyed susans; columbine and cardinal flowers attract hummingbirds; swamp and butterfly milkweed support monarch caterpillars and butterflies, and many have luscious scents. For a list of native plants by county go to www.MichiganFloral.net. The Missaukee County Conservation District in Lake City also has an annual native plant sale  and have a scheduled workshop May 27, 2026, 6:00-7:30 PM: "Native Landscaping for Everyone." Must pre-register on website; cost $35. (https://missaukeecd.org - (231) 839-7193)
Plant and Wildflower Nature Guides: Start planning your first spring walk. The Cadillac Area Land Conservancy (CALC) has created two nature guides for the Carl T. Johnson Preserve. "Common Plants of the Carl T Johnson Preserve" includes watercolor paintings and plant characteristics to easily identify over 75 species. "Wildflowers of the Johnson Preserve" is a quick reference tool, grouping wildflowers by color. As you hike the preserve take a moment to notice the amazing variety of wildflowers, grasses, ferns, shrubs and trees. Check out these beautiful guides at: https://calc-landtrust.org/nature-guides-for-the-carl-t.../
Information provided by CALC winter 2026 newsletter, Nature News. See you on the trail in a few months!
Winter Reading: The National Gardener is the quarterly publication of the National Garden Clubs. The 2026 winter edition has some great articles on garden related winter topics. You may be interested in checking out, "Conserving Our Precious Native Bees" by David Kollen (starts on page 6) and "Where Do Butterflies Go In Winter" by Jan Pingel (starts on page 10). TIPS FOR FRESH FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS
Fresh flowers will wilt and die more quickly if there are cut fruits nearby that emit significant ethylene. Fruits that emit ethylene are: apples, bananas, avocados, cantaloupe, peaches, pears, plums, mangoes, papayas, and tomatoes. Other considerations to make arrangements last longer are: using clean tools and containers; stripping leaves off any stems in the water; cutting stems under water and at an angle; using floral food; changing the water at least every other day; keeping flowers away from heat and direct sun; and trimming the stems an inch when the water is changed.

Join Us!

Membership is open to all men and women interested in the areas of horticulture, conservation, floral, and landscape design.  Opportunities within the Club include working in the community gardens, fundraising activities, program planning, and regular meeting hostess duties.  Meetings are held at the First Presbyterian Church of Cadillac, 221 E. Harris, Cadillac. If you have questions, use the contact form on our website.

Maybe you love gardening, flowers or environmental advocacy but do not have the time to join the Cadillac Garden Club. There are several ways you can support the Club and its work without being a member:
  1. Volunteer to work alongside Club members to weed, plant, trim, or spread mulch at the Sound Garden on 398 Chestnut St., Cadillac (just east of Consumers Energy) along the Clam River. Members spend time there weekly in spring, summer and fall and help is always needed! We also have a standing "clean-up" day the 2nd Saturday of the month, June through October. Check dates under EVENTS. Individuals, families, schools, businesses, churches and organizations can help. The Sound Garden is a community treasure that has visitors in all seasons so help us out one time or on a recurring  basis (like one day a month). Contact Kathy at (231) 878-0492 or (231) 775-7762 to schedule a time to join us.
  2. Attend a monthly meeting that looks interesting to you. The upcoming agenda with program topics and information is listed under EVENTS. Most meetings/programs are free and guests are welcome. If this is not true it will be listed in the EVENTS posting. Workshops where attendees complete a flower related project usually have a small materials charge.
  3. Donate to the Cadillac Garden Club. We do the primary planning and maintenance of the Sound Garden and need funds to purchase plants, trees, flowers, mulch, musical items, and sculptures. Funds are also used to educate members and the community on topics related to our mission. Donations can be made to the Cadillac Garden Club by sending a check to CGC Treasurer, 2666 Pleasant Lake Shore Dr., Cadillac MI 49601. We also write grants to secure funds when we can.
  4. Attend the annual Cadillac Garden Club Home Tour this November. Information for the upcoming tour is posted under EVENTS. This is our only fundraising event.
